The heart of my home is the kitchen. It is the place where everyone gathers, even on holidays and at parties, it is a place of comfort where I can feel a loving union to the spirits of those that have gone before me. These beautiful souls surround me with an aura of love and confidence, they guide me through each preparation, seasoning the result with love-filled offerings, flavored with an essence of a time that came before. For me, there is a little bit of their eternal love infused in each recipe.
I am not a trained chef; I am very simply a home cook, mother of five and I recently became a grandmother. My family loves the food I prepare for them, and for that I thank my parents, our neighbors and the ancestors who came generations before them to bring delicious meals and beloved family customs to the table. In every ingredient of every meal, the most important element was then and is now, love. It didn’t matter whether it was breakfast, take-to-school lunches or a nice sit-down dinner, you truly sensed the love and care that went into each meal. These meals helped to ground us and provided us with a sense of belonging and connection to one another.
Cooking with Gratitude is a culinary journey of love, family, food and togetherness. It reinforces the notion that food has this unique way of bringing people together. Its helps to bond us as a family and as friends and can forge new friendships. We may differ culturally, regionally, politically or religiously, but we can all agree that we love to eat good food and share a delicious meal.
The affect of an aroma or meal can also bring back many treasured memories, they can remind us of a loved one or an event in an instance. Food and the loving preparation of a meal are powerful ingredients of life.
Cooking food does not have to be complicated to be delicious.
The recipes in my book, Cooking with Gratitude have to follow with ingredients that are found at most grocery stores or within your home pantry. After all, I am a home cook with no formal training, and I do not have a staff or a professional kitchen in my home. But these family recipes have delighted us for many years and have brought much joy and flavorful meals to our table and celebrations. I hope that you and yours will enjoy them as much as our family has over the years.
